Both simplicity and complication can be beautiful. There is something romantic about the physicality of the old telephone, the slightly bizarre protrusions and the audible clunks of the heavy machinery. Likely too that one fancies, were one to use such a thing, one might encounter down the other end of the line a rather dulcet tone through the slow static, and a quite forgotten mode of conversation, refined and quaintly mannered. 
 
Perhaps you have a friend who talks like they are in a film with Cary Grant; perhaps you have a little leisure to spend in idle conversation with someone; perhaps you wish to gesture to a particularly mellifluous voice: write them a letter.
